Loss adjuster
A loss adjuster is a professional appointed by an insurer to investigate an accident, verify documents and assess how much a claim is worth before the insurer decides what to offer.
Adjusters review the police report, inspect vehicles, check medical records and sometimes speak to witnesses, working on behalf of the insurer that appointed them. Their findings shape the insurer’s opening position, but their view of liability or value is not the final word.
Because the adjuster is not acting for you, it helps to keep your own copies of every document you hand over, and to have your own understanding of your injuries and losses before responding to their questions.
How insurers and adjusters handle a claim explains what to expect from this stage.
