A claim assessment is a plain-language check of your situation. It looks at the type of claim it likely is, the deadline that applies, and the evidence you have so far. It exists for the moment before you decide whether to take things further, not after.

What we actually check first

Every situation starts with the same three questions. First, what kind of claim this looks like, such as an ordinary injury claim, a fatal claim, or an uninsured-driver claim.

Second, which deadline applies. An ordinary injury claim generally runs six years, while a fatal claim runs three from the date of death.^[1][2] Third, what evidence already exists, such as a police report or medical records.

What an assessment will not do

It will not tell you a compensation figure. No honest assessment can do that from a short conversation.

Compensation depends on medical evidence, the facts of the accident, and legal argument that only develops properly once a lawyer has your full case in front of them. Anyone offering a number this early is not being straight with you.

Why this step is worth taking early

Getting the basics checked before you decide anything else has two benefits. You stop guessing at your own deadline, and you stop assuming a route applies to you that actually does not, such as expecting the Motor Insurers’ Bureau to cover vehicle damage it does not cover.

What to bring to make it useful

Bring the date of the accident, a short account of what happened, any police report you have, and a description of your injuries or damage. Missing pieces are normal at this stage and do not stop the assessment from being useful.
