Statutory declaration

A statutory declaration, known locally as an akuan berkanun, is a written statement a person signs and swears before a commissioner for oaths, confirming that its contents are true.

In a road accident claim it is often used to explain a delay, such as a police report made after the usual reporting window, or to set out facts where no other document exists. Because it is sworn, giving false information in it can carry legal consequences, so accuracy matters more than convenience.

A statutory declaration can support a claim; it does not replace primary evidence like a police report, medical report or witness statement.
