Multiplier
The multiplier is the number of years’ worth of future loss a Malaysian court applies when it calculates loss of future earnings or a family’s lost support.
It is not chosen freely; it follows a formula tied to the claimant’s or the deceased’s age at the time of injury or death, with an age limit that was extended by law reform in 2019.[1] A younger claimant generally attracts a larger multiplier than an older one, reflecting more years of working life ahead.
The multiplier is applied to a separate figure, the multiplicand, and the two together produce the future-loss award. Neither figure is meaningful on its own.
How future earning capacity is claimed explains how the two work together.
