Interim payment
An interim payment is money paid to an injured claimant before the claim is finally settled or decided, usually to cover pressing needs.
It is more common where liability is not seriously disputed but the full extent of the injury, and so the final figure, is not yet clear because treatment is ongoing. An interim payment is deducted from the final compensation once the claim resolves; it is an advance, not an extra sum on top.
Whether an interim payment is available depends on the insurer or the court agreeing to it, so it is worth raising directly rather than assuming it will be offered.
Interim payments during a claim explains when and how these are arranged.
